  • APR: 25.74% variable.

Discover it® Secured Credit Card: is it a good card?

The Discover it® Secured Credit Card is one of the best secured credit cards available in the market today.

Not only does it charge a $0 annual fee, but it also provides good rates on cash back rewards for all cardholders.

The card reports all account payments to the main credit bureaus in the country. Therefore, responsible use can boost your credit score within a few months.

Discover also automatically reviews your profile after 7 months and if your account is in good standing, you can upgrade to an unsecured card.

The security deposit starts at a minimum $200 and can get up to $2,500, which is determined by the bank after assessing your financial profile.

The deposit is refundable and you can get it back once you graduate to an unsecured card or close your account in good standing.

There are no minimum credit score requirements and all credit levels are welcome to apply. The main drawback to this card is its relatively high annual percentage rate at a variable 25.74%.

However, if you pay your bill in full and on time every month, you won’t have to worry about paying interest.

The Discover it® Secured Credit Card is one of the best available choices for people who want to build or strengthen their credit scores.

But is it the right card for your financial needs? See below for the perks and drawbacks of this card so you can make a responsible and well informed choice.

Benefits

  • 2% cash back on gas and restaurants up to $1,000 in combined quarterly purchases;
  • Unlimited 1% cash back on all other purchases;
  • Dollar for dollar match on rewards at the end of your first year;
  • No monthly, annual or membership fees;
  • Relatively low security deposit;
  • Reports account payments to the three main credit bureaus;
  • Automatic review for an unsecured card after 7 months.

Disadvantages

The only real disadvantage to this card is its high APR. With a 25.74% variable interest rate, it’s important to pay your bills on time each month to avoid carrying a balance.

But when it comes to secured cards, carrying a balance should be avoided at all costs anyway.

What is the required credit score?

Unlike some other secured cards, the Discover it® Secured doesn’t require a minimum credit score. Therefore, people with damaged or no credit history at all are eligible for approval.

However, approval is not guaranteed as the bank does not rely only on credit scores. Discover will perform a history check and negative records like a pending bankruptcy can hurt your chances.
